The son of an anthropologist, Lothar Baumgarten inherited his father's desire to study cultures that incarnate Europeans' idea of "the other," developing themes in his work on the difficult process of the meeting of cultures.
Baumgarten began his career with pieces that go back to the original German anthropological practice, like that initiated by Goethe, of describing a place without ever having been there, using only archival documentation and material readily available in his own land of origin.
By
adopting this method Baumgarten highlights the absurd pretence of understanding
and studying "the other."
