Daniel Buren was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, in 1938. His artistic career took shape in the field of Conceptual art, that widespread movement of the mid-1960s that focused on the idea rather than the realization of the artwork, thereby liberating it from its traditional role as unique and unrepeatable.
Since
his first show in Paris in 1966 Buren has gradually reduced his painting to
a series of vertical bands that are each 8.7 cm thick, a kind of "zero
degree." Their uniformity and neutrality lend themselves to endless repetition
and can be applied to numerous varieties of surfaces.
