Sandro Chia (Florence, Italy, 1946), was one of the first artists to vigorously address the need for a return to painting, at a time when it seemed to be obsolete. It appeared that the path of art could be pursued only through other means, although Chia feels that painting cannot "make a comeback," because it cannot be abandoned.

Sinfonia incompiuta (Unfinished Symphony), 1980, is an example of both the desecration and the celebration of pictorial activity. It manifests the existential condition of the artist who finds himself using a method of investigation and representation of the world--painting--that is much maligned and at the same time so full of history.
