According to Kounellis (Pireaeus, 1936), contemporary
society has lost its organizing principle, a measure capable of producing
a cultural synthesis. Thus he sees the task of the artist as the search for
a new measure, passing, however, through the fragmentation that defines the
time in which he lives. The negation of a recognizable style was Kounellis's
first step. His work is structured in cycles, during which a certain typology
is examined. A constant element is the recognition of the political value
of his artistic engagement, often expressed in terms of dissent. Kounellis
is one of the leading figures in the Arte Povera movement.
