Bertrand Lavier was born in Châtillon-sur Seine, France, in 1949 and lives and works in Aignay-le-Duc. Since his artistic debut, Lavier has focused on the relationships between reality and the instruments of representation, visual art (painting, sculpture, and photography), and verbal language, de-emphasizing the traditional concept of art and presenting a concise exploration of the paradoxes of language.
Since the early 1980s this reflection has been translated into works that question their own status; in fact, Lavier gives us objects of everyday use covered with dense brushstrokes of acrylic paint. If on one hand this action takes an integral element away from the objects’ original state, on the other it comments upon the very act of making art. The works come close to becoming artisan pieces, almost to the point of being camouflaged.
