Richard Long was born in Bristol, England, in 1945. In the 1970s his artistic activities began to incorporate elementary actions such as walking in the outdoors, documenting his movements and their impact on the environment through drawings and photographs.

This impact was eventually reconsidered as the creation of simple geometric shapes. For example, in 1967 Long created a work by walking across a field, leaving a track in the grass that resembled a grid.
