SUMMARY:XXII Giornata del Contemporaneo
DESCRIPTION:Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea is taking part in the 22nd Contemporary Art Day\, a major event promoted by AMACI – the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums\, with the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture and in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. \nThe theme of the 2026 edition is “Geographies of the Contemporary”\, an exploration of the present as a space in constant transformation\, in which geographies emerge as dynamic constructs\, subject to ongoing processes of redefinition\, while places become spaces of interaction\, shaped by multiple forces that redefine their boundaries and meanings. \nCastello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art will offer free admission to the public\, alongside a renewed display of its collection and major exhibition projects. \n  \nEVENTS\n  \nMasters of Design. Architecture in Turin between Memory and Innovation: Andrea Bruno\nConference and guided tour\nOrganised by Fondazione per l’architettura di Torino\nIn collaboration with CRRI – Castello di Rivoli Research Institute\nTheatre\, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\nConference: 10.30 am–12.30 pm\, followed by a guided tour \n  \nFor Contemporary Art Day\, CRRI – Castello di Rivoli Research Institute is collaborating with Fondazione per l’architettura di Torino\, hosting a conference dedicated to Andrea Bruno\, the architect responsible for the restoration of the Castello and its conversion into a Museum of Contemporary Art. \nThe conference is part of the cultural programme “Masters of Design. Architecture in Turin between Memory and Innovation”\, an initiative devoted to a critical reassessment of key figures in Turin’s architecture from the twentieth century to the present day. The programme aims to bring the memory of architectural practice into dialogue with contemporary debate\, highlighting professional archives\, built works and first-hand accounts through a format combining public conferences and guided tours. \nFollowing meetings dedicated to Elio Luzi\, Ada Bursi and Pietro Derossi\, the series concludes with an event at Castello di Rivoli devoted to Andrea Bruno.\n  \n\nAndrea Bruno\nOne of Italy’s most significant architects\, Andrea Bruno (Turin\, 1931–2025) helped redefine the role of the architect as a restorer\, interpreting heritage through a critical approach and developing a design practice based on dialogue between history and the contemporary world. His international career bears witness to an approach grounded in historical knowledge\, reversibility and cultural responsibility. \nHis most important projects include the transformation of Castello di Rivoli into a Museum of Contemporary Art\, the restoration of the Brigittines Church in Brussels and his interventions at the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan. \n  \n\nThe conference\nThe conference will focus on restoration\, museography and the international dimension of architectural practice. Through a dialogue between scholars\, collaborators and members of Bruno’s architectural practice\, it will explore the relationship between design\, time and materials\, while also addressing the archive as a living\, active form of heritage.\n  \nProgramme\nInstitutional greetings\nMarcella Beccaria\, Deputy Director and Head of CRRI\, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea \nIntroduction and chair\nAlessandra Siviero\, President of Fondazione per l’architettura\, Turin \nAndrea Bruno: Personal and Biographical Profile\nAndrea Bruno Jr.\, Architect\, UBA Studio \nThe Project and the Archive: Time\, Materials and Memory in the Work of Andrea Bruno\nGiorgio Danesi\, Art Historian and author of Il progetto del limite. Preserved at CRRI\, the archive is dedicated to safeguarding and transmitting the artistic legacy of Chiara Fumai (Rome\, 1978 – Bari\, 2017). \nCRRI is a partner in the initiative\, which also involves the Turin-based association Mucho Mas!. \nOCCULTA was conceived and is coordinated by Cristina Voto\, lecturer and researcher at the Dipartimento degli Studi Umanistici of the University of Turin\, together with Francesca Pegan\, researcher at the Chiara Fumai Archive. \nThrough participatory sessions and activities open to the public\, OCCULTA offers a programme of research and mediation centred on materials from the Fumai Archive. These materials provide a starting point for exploring how an artist’s legacy is constructed\, preserved and made accessible to the community. \n  \nThe conference\nThe public event\, presented in a touch-and-speech format\, will feature contributions from the project’s Scientific Committee\, comprising lecturers Massimo Bonifazio\, Eleonora Chiais\, Daniela Fargione and Emilia Perassi\, together with Guido Costa. \nTheir contributions will explore the artist’s practice through its multiple fields of research. Guido Costa\, the artist’s long-standing gallerist\, will share with the audience a gift he received from Chiara Fumai. \n  \nProgramme\nInstitutional greetings\nMarcella Beccaria\, Deputy Director and Head of CRRI\, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea \nIntroduction\nCristina Voto\, Researcher in Philosophy and Theory of Language\, University of Turin \nTouch-and-speech\nMassimo Bonifazio\, Professor of German Literature\, University of Turin; Eleonora Chiais\, Professor of Fashion Semiotics\, University of Turin; Guido Costa\, Guido Costa Projects\, Turin; Daniela Fargione\, Professor of Anglo-American Literature\, University of Turin; Emilia Perassi\, Professor of Spanish American Literature\, University of Turin. \n  \nBooking\nRegister for the event: https://www.eventbrite.it/e/2001168684405?aff=oddtdtcreator \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe events are organised as part of the 22nd Contemporary Art Day\, promoted by AMACI. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Michelle Williams Gamaker
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Williams Gamaker\nSaturday 7 November\, 4.30 pm \nAs part of Contemporanea Film Festival\, curated by Distretto Cinema \nIn collaboration with Contemporanea Film Festival\, Castello di Rivoli presents a focus on Michelle Williams Gamaker\, an artist and filmmaker who critically re-examines the history of British and Hollywood cinema. Through her films and installations\, the British-Sri Lankan artist subverts the codes and conventions of cinematic language to bring marginalised characters to the fore. \nFor the first time in Italy\, her two most recent works will be presented: Oberon (2023)\, commissioned by the British Film Institute\, and Strange Evidence (2026). \n  \nOberon \nMichelle Williams Gamaker\, UK\, 2023\, 8 mins\, original version with Italian subtitles \nThe work takes as its starting point a series of photographs of Merle Oberon held at the BFI\, exploring how the actress’s image was constructed. The artist imagines Oberon during a make-up test for the leading role in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes (1948). Through this fictional screen test\, she stages the power dynamics concealed behind the camera\, exposing the strict control exercised by the studios over the actress’s public image. \n  \nStrange Evidence \nMichelle Williams Gamaker\, UK\, 2026\, 30 mins\, original version with Italian subtitles \nThe artist combines the aesthetics of body horror with the atmosphere of film noir to explore the story of Merle Oberon\, the celebrated actress of the 1930s who concealed her Sri Lankan and Indian origins to escape racism in Hollywood. Throughout her life\, she maintained that she had been born in Tasmania to British parents\, keeping her secret until her death. Alternating between colour and black-and-white imagery\, Strange Evidence retraces the treatments Oberon underwent to lighten her skin\, examining the wounds of a denied identity and the price she paid to establish herself in the film industry. \nThe screenings will be introduced by Paola Zanini\, Head of the Education Department at Castello di Rivoli\, and Giulia Magno\, curator and co-Artistic Director of Contemporanea Film Festival\, who will discuss the artist’s practice and the themes explored in her work. \n  \nAdmission: Reduced museum admission ticket €6.50\, including a visit to the Permanent Collection. \n  \nPhoto: Michelle Williams Gamaker\, Oberon\, 2023.
