Il mestiere del pittore\, organised by CoopCulture with Villaggio Globale International\, and curated by Annamaria Bava and Gelsomina Spione (23 March – 28 July 2024\, Musei Reali – Sala Chiablese\, Turin)\, a painting by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri\, known as Guercino (Cento\, Ferrara\, 1591 – Bologna\, 1666) will be on display in the Rectangular Room of Villa Cerruti. The work\, now part of the Cerruti Collection\, was for a long time the property of Andreina Cerruti (Turin\, 1923-2022)\, sister of Francesco Federico and first President of the Fondazione Francesco Federico Cerruti per l’Arte. \nThe painting portrays St Andrew as an elderly man with a beard and flowing hair\, whose gaze\, veiled with sadness\, is fixed on an undetermined point outside the frame. The old man is effortlessly holding an X-shaped cross\, the instrument of his martyrdom and customary iconographic attribute. The small size and contemplative mood suggest that the work was perhaps used for private worship. The textured finish and soft brushstrokes\, characterised by nuanced chiaroscuro place the work in the fifth decade of the 17th century. A period that coincides with the painter’s move from his native Cento to Bologna\, where he also transferred his flourishing workshop. \nOn the occasion of the display of the painting in the Villa in Rivoli\, on Friday 10 May 2024\, from 6.00 to 7.30 p.m.\, the first lecture of Live Collection will take place. Live Collection is a new series of appointments at the Cerruti Collection\, featuring in-depth studies and lecture-concerts. Mario Calisi on piano and Lorenzo Fazzini on flute will perform pieces by Franz Benda\, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Raffaele Galli. He is a musician\, scholar and teacher recognised by international critics. Since 2009\, he has been teaching at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ in Milan. He has taught ‘Studio della strumentazione applicata alla partitura’ in the Master of Musicology Degree Course at the University of Milan. Among his many honours\, he was awarded the title ‘Grand Officier de l’Ordre Mondiale de la Science Musicale’ in Geneva in 1994. He has performed in Italy\, France\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Austria\, Portugal\, Poland\, Lichtenstein\, Bulgaria\, Brazil and Croatia\, where he has released concert recordings for radio and television. W. Stettler\, musicologist and music critic\, described him as an “eclectic\, profound\, coherent musician… Mario Calisi\, a diamond-sounding pianist\, fascinates and enraptures even the most demanding audience… His sense of metrics and adherence to tempi recalls Glen Gould in his charm.” \n  \n \nLorenzo Fazzini\n\nBorn in Pavia in 1995\, he graduated with top marks and honours from the Conservatorio ‘Antonio Vivaldi’ in Alessandria\, in the class of Stefano Parrino. He continued his studies with Roberto Issoglio\, graduating with top marks in chamber music. He won First Prize in the Soloist category at the 3rd International Competition City of Scandicci (FI)\, Second Prize at the 1st International Competition City of Villorba (TV) and Second Prize at the 2nd International Music Competition Malopolska (PL). He began his concert activity as a soloist\, soloist with orchestra\, in duo\, trio and in various chamber music ensembles. He has performed with\, among others\, Peter-Lukas Graf\, Bruno Canino\, Daria Masiero\, Roberto Sérvile\, Jean-Claude Guidarini\, Luigi Maio and Joohee Shin. He has collaborated with numerous conductors\, including M. Alibrando\, F.I. Ciampa\, G. de Lorenzo\, G. Emilsson\, A.R. Casas and S. Pasini. He has given concerts in Italy\, France\, Switzerland and China\, collaborating with the European Philharmonic Orchestra\, Castel Monastero\, ‘Le Altre Note’ – Valtellina Festival\, Collegiata in Bellinzona\, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Toulouse and Bouc-Bel-Air Cathedral\, Teatro Fraschini and RAI television studios in Rome. DESCRIPTION:UNA SCUOLA AL CASTELLO DI RIVOLI is a new place for postgraduate art education\, founded in 2024\, and based at the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in the Piemonte region of Italy. Accompanied by a rotating ENSEMBLE of local educators\, a group of 12 recently-graduated PRACTITIONERS will work collectively and critically to dismantle their disciplines and delay production in a spirit of open dialogue. \nA pilot seminar class\, Prologue for a School in the Making\, will take place over 4 days\nfrom 23 – 26 September 2024 at UNA SCUOLA AL CASTELLO DI RIVOLI\, and in the context of Aperto\, a training project promoted by the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT (www.aperto-crt.it).  The school will then continue the following week with its first dedicated cohort of PRACTITIONERS through an intensive series of workshops\,  An Attempt at Extending and Stretching\, provided by the ENSEMBLE from 30 September – 3 October 2024. \nwww.una-scuola.com \n— \nGlossary\nUNA SCUOLA AL CASTELLO DI RIVOLI is a new postgraduate art education programme. The school was established in the spring of 2024 by FACILITATORS – artist Cally Spooner and curator Lilou Vidal – via PUBLISHING CHANNELS shaped by  THE MEDIUM Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey. The opportunity to delve deeper into the figure of the great protagonist of the French Impressionist season arises from the presence in the Rectangular room of the Cerruti Collection of the painting La Falaise et la Porte d’Aval\, 1885\, from the Museum Barberini in Potsdam\, hosted until 18 August 2024 in the context of the Traveling Artworks project. \nThe conference will be accompanied by a piano performance by Giuliano Bertolotto Bianc. He published books on Claude Monet and on art between 1945 and 1965. He taught at the Academies of Fine Arts in Turin and Milan and since 1998 has taught History of Contemporary Art at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. \n

The program promotes experimental approaches that bridge various disciplines\, where visual art intersects with other contemporary languages\, such as cinema\, dance\, and music. The project explores the dual nature of the word ‘live\,’ emphasizing the inseparable connection between art and audience participation within the Museum’s spaces. \nThe events will take place on Saturday\, September 28\, and Saturday\, October 12\, 2024 – AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art– offering to the public a series of activities featuring international artists. The two events are dedicated to the theme of Erratic Bodies – a title borrowed from the glacial erratics in the morainic landscape of the Val di Susa – and are curated by Giulia Colletti. \nTransported by Alpine glaciers to the valley floor during the Ice Age\, these masses\, deposited in unexpected locations across the Piedmont region\, often became objects of worship and sacred rituals\, leaving traces in local folklore. Composed of sediments distinct from their surrounding environment\, glacial erratics serve as witnesses to an unusual journey. They thus embody a state of being ‘out of place’ in their context\, prompting reflections on contemporary issues of migration and transition for both human and non-human bodies\, as well as the challenges posed by past and present climate changes. \nThe artists featured over the two days are Mohammad Al Faraj\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Matilde Cerruti Quara\, Ufuoma Essi\, Lamin Fofana\, Invernomuto\, and Lea Porsager. \nThe program blends social rituals\, immaterial archives\, and various cultural languages and approaches\, exploring\, over the two days\, the significance of collective memory—not as a mere sum of individual experiences\, but as a process of shared narrative that cements a common identity. By promoting the convergence of transdisciplinary research\, the events highlight how performing arts\, as well as living bodies\, do not exist within a confined space but take shape and meaning in their erratic existence\, continually shifting direction and drawing from the overcoming of geographical\, disciplinary\, and imposed classifications. \nThe schedule includes various artistic interventions addressing both individual and collective challenges related to the erasure and rehabilitation of historical narratives. The focus is on movement\, both physical and imaginative\, with research exploring transitions\, boundary crossings\, and the imagination of other worlds\, embracing a state of personal and collective metamorphosis. \n\nLiving Museum\nErratic Bodies I\nSeptember 28\, 2024\nIn the morning and early afternoon\, the public is invited to actively participate in PALINSESTO\, the first chapter of Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention at Castello di Rivoli. The artist encourages visitors to interact with her body by writing freely on it in response to the question ‘WHO ARE YOU?’. By dissolving her artistic identity and viewing the performer as a channel for receiving and transmitting a universal message\, Matilde offers herself as a blank page and mirror for collective thought\, prompting reflection on the multiple layers that make up the narratives we tell ourselves. The performance draws inspiration from the history of Castello\, which in its own way is an ultimate palimpsest\, particularly from the inscriptions found on its walls left by soldiers during the Second World War. \nThe afternoon continues with a preview of Lea Porsager‘s Rosy-fingered Dusk (2023) and Clockwork C.O.W. (2024)\, two 90-second flicker film loops accompanied by texts and pictograms. Both works reference the so-called Doomsday Clock\, created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as a way of tracking how close humanity is to a global catastrophe. The closer to midnight\, the closer to total collapse. In the short loops\, subatomic particles known as muons (or\, in cow-speak\, “moo-ons”) move sleepily and erratically through impossible\, impassable expanses. \nAt sunset\, the public is invited to participate in REALISMO MAGICO\, an immersive poetry performance that concludes Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention. For this occasion\, she has written new texts reflecting on memory\, intergenerational trauma\, and the cathartic power of community. Exploring the human paradox with its dance of light and shadow—especially in times of war—the performance aims to offer the audience a poetic ritual as a means of collective reconnection. \nFinally\, Lamin Fofana will present a new performance designed to explore\, through the rituality of sound\, the notion of the extension and fluctuation of time. \n\nLiving Museum\nErratic Bodies II\nOctober 12\, 2024\nOn October 12\, Castello di Rivoli will present Living Museum as part of AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art. \nInspired by Toni Morrison’s text The Site of Memory\, Ufuoma Essi’s film Half Memory will be presented for the first time in Italy at Castello di Rivoli\, featuring a live soundtrack by Shamica Ruddock. The film is a profound meditation on memory\, isolation\, and contemporary narratives\, oscillating between years\, cities\, and evolving images\, exploring the present as an artifact of the past. \nMohammad Al Faraj will present a participatory action titled What it Will Take to Flock the Wings of Freedom Again? The audience will join the artist in awakening the bird of prayer\, wishing for a better tomorrow\, using palm leaves as wings and words and poetry as the wind. \nThe museum’s café will offer special aperitifs\, providing an opportunity to enjoy a drink and food. The special aperitifs are conceived by artist Moza Almatrooshi and prepared by the museum café. Almatrooshi’s artistic and culinary practice draws on ancient and modern mythologies of the Arabian Peninsula\, influencing both her recipe creation and her political research on food in the region. \nInvernomuto will present BlackMed for the first time at Castello di Rivoli. This project was initiated as a digital archive of sounds collected from various sources\, inspired by the insights of scholar Alessandra Di Maio on the Mediterranean Sea. Based on the identification of this fluid space marked by migratory crises\, BlackMed leverages themes of mobility\, intersection\, and exchange that are constants in its history and present. \nFor the presentation of BlackMed at Castello di Rivoli\, there will also be a special afternoon visit to the Cerruti Collection\, hosted at Villa Cerruti and guided by art historian Fabio Cafagna. The visit will focus on the various representations of the Mediterranean over the centuries\, starting with the 17th- and 18th-century atlases from Francesco Federico Cerruti’s collection. He is deeply influenced by the oral traditions and legends of the Saudi collective imagination\, drawing inspiration from social practices and architectures\, both urban and rural\, of everyday life. \nMoza Almatrooshi experiments with culinary recipes and forms of collective storytelling. She uses literary fantasy to analyze gender dynamics and geopolitics. Her practice is distinguished by the symbolic use of food in narrating alternative stories\, stemming from the erasure of Arab polytheistic practices.  \nMatilde Cerruti Quara is a poet\, performer\, actress\, and writer. Her artistic practice flows between experimental theater\, text-based works\, and immersive installations. Rooted in the magical realism of language and narrative\, her work interrogates themes of singular and collective identity\, exploring archetypes\, belief systems\, natural forces\, spirituality and rituals\, as well as sexuality and power dynamics.  \nUfuoma Essi primarily works with film and moving images\, as well as installation and sound. Her research focuses on feminist epistemology and the reconstruction of lost histories. The archive is a fundamental tool through which Essi seeks to examine and fill the silences and gaps produced by political and historical narratives.  \nLamin Fofana is an electronic music producer\, DJ\, and artist whose repertoire ranges from instrumental electronica to experimental music\, ambient\, and techno. In his practice\, Fofana explores identity\, diaspora\, and migration\, reflecting his translocal experience from Sierra Leone and Guinea to the United States. His artistic vision is deeply influenced by the various sounds and cultures he has encountered along his journey. \nInvernomuto is the name under which Simone Bertuzzi and Simone Trabucchi have been operating since 2003. Invernomuto tends to think openly\, developing different projects that take the form of moving images\, sounds\, performative actions\, and editorial activities\, within the context of a practice defined by the both dispersed and precise use of different media. \nLea Porsager intertwines fabulation and speculation with a variety of expressive means\, including film\, sculpture\, photography\, and text. Her works embrace themes such as science\, politics\, feminism\, and esotericism.  \n

Speakers include Gabriele Vigilante\, one of the five authors\, as well as Giuseppe Dardanello\, Professor of Modern Art History at the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Turin\, Sofia Biondi\, Registrar of Castello di Rivoli\, and Luisa Mensi\, Conservator\, who has collaborated for years with Castello and many artists in the Collection. The program promotes experimental approaches that bridge various disciplines\, where visual art intersects with other contemporary languages\, such as cinema\, dance\, and music. The project explores the dual nature of the word ‘live\,’ emphasizing the inseparable connection between art and audience participation within the Museum’s spaces. \nThe events will take place on Saturday\, September 28\, and Saturday\, October 12\, 2024 – AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art– offering to the public a series of activities featuring international artists. The two events are dedicated to the theme of Erratic Bodies – a title borrowed from the glacial erratics in the morainic landscape of the Val di Susa – and are curated by Giulia Colletti. \nTransported by Alpine glaciers to the valley floor during the Ice Age\, these masses\, deposited in unexpected locations across the Piedmont region\, often became objects of worship and sacred rituals\, leaving traces in local folklore. Composed of sediments distinct from their surrounding environment\, glacial erratics serve as witnesses to an unusual journey. They thus embody a state of being ‘out of place’ in their context\, prompting reflections on contemporary issues of migration and transition for both human and non-human bodies\, as well as the challenges posed by past and present climate changes. \nThe artists featured over the two days are Mohammad Al Faraj\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Matilde Cerruti Quara\, Ufuoma Essi\, Lamin Fofana\, Invernomuto\, and Lea Porsager. \nThe program blends social rituals\, immaterial archives\, and various cultural languages and approaches\, exploring\, over the two days\, the significance of collective memory—not as a mere sum of individual experiences\, but as a process of shared narrative that cements a common identity. By promoting the convergence of transdisciplinary research\, the events highlight how performing arts\, as well as living bodies\, do not exist within a confined space but take shape and meaning in their erratic existence\, continually shifting direction and drawing from the overcoming of geographical\, disciplinary\, and imposed classifications. \nThe schedule includes various artistic interventions addressing both individual and collective challenges related to the erasure and rehabilitation of historical narratives. The focus is on movement\, both physical and imaginative\, with research exploring transitions\, boundary crossings\, and the imagination of other worlds\, embracing a state of personal and collective metamorphosis. \nLiving Museum \nErratic Bodies I\n\nSeptember 28\, 2024 \nIn the morning and early afternoon\, the public is invited to actively participate in PALINSESTO\, the first chapter of Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention at Castello di Rivoli. The artist encourages visitors to interact with her body by writing freely on it in response to the question ‘WHO ARE YOU?’. By dissolving her artistic identity and viewing the performer as a channel for receiving and transmitting a universal message\, Matilde offers herself as a blank page and mirror for collective thought\, prompting reflection on the multiple layers that make up the narratives we tell ourselves. The performance draws inspiration from the history of Castello\, which in its own way is an ultimate palimpsest\, particularly from the inscriptions found on its walls left by soldiers during the Second World War. \nThe afternoon continues with a preview of Lea Porsager‘s Rosy-fingered Dusk (2023) and Clockwork C.O.W. (2024)\, two 90-second flicker film loops accompanied by texts and pictograms. Both works reference the so-called Doomsday Clock\, created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as a way of tracking how close humanity is to a global catastrophe. The closer to midnight\, the closer to total collapse. In the short loops\, subatomic particles known as muons (or\, in cow-speak\, “moo-ons”) move sleepily and erratically through impossible\, impassable expanses. \nAt sunset\, the public is invited to participate in REALISMO MAGICO\, an immersive poetry performance that concludes Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention. For this occasion\, she has written new texts reflecting on memory\, intergenerational trauma\, and the cathartic power of community. Exploring the human paradox with its dance of light and shadow—especially in times of war—the performance aims to offer the audience a poetic ritual as a means of collective reconnection. \nLamin Fofana will present a new performance designed to explore\, through the rituality of sound\, the notion of the extension and fluctuation of time. \n  \nLiving Museum\n \nErratic Bodies II\n\nOctober 12\, 2024 \nOn October 12\, Castello di Rivoli will present Living Museum as part of AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art. \nMohammad Al Faraj will present a participatory action titled What it Will Take to Flock the Wings of Freedom Again? The audience will join the artist in awakening the bird of prayer\, wishing for a better tomorrow\, using palm leaves as wings and words and poetry as the wind. \nInspired by Toni Morrison’s text The Site of Memory\, Ufuoma Essi’s film Half Memory will be presented for the first time in Italy at Castello di Rivoli\, featuring a live soundtrack by Shamica Ruddock. The film is a profound meditation on memory\, isolation\, and contemporary narratives\, oscillating between years\, cities\, and evolving images\, exploring the present as an artifact of the past. \nThe museum’s café will offer special aperitifs\, providing an opportunity to enjoy a drink and food. The special aperitifs are conceived by artist Moza Almatrooshi and prepared by the museum café. Almatrooshi’s artistic and culinary practice draws on ancient and modern mythologies of the Arabian Peninsula\, influencing both her recipe creation and her political research on food in the region. \nInvernomuto will present Black Med for the first time at Castello di Rivoli. This project was initiated as a digital archive of sounds collected from various sources\, inspired by the insights of scholar Alessandra Di Maio on the Mediterranean Sea. Based on the identification of this fluid space marked by migratory crises\, BlackMed leverages themes of mobility\, intersection\, and exchange that are constants in its history and present. \nFor the presentation of BlackMed at Castello di Rivoli\, there will also be a special afternoon visit to the Cerruti Collection\, hosted at Villa Cerruti and guided by art historian Fabio Cafagna. The visit will focus on the various representations of the Mediterranean over the centuries\, starting with the 17th- and 18th-century atlases from Francesco Federico Cerruti’s collection. The archive is a fundamental tool through which Essi seeks to examine and fill the silences and gaps produced by political and historical narratives.  \nLamin Fofana is an electronic music producer\, DJ\, and artist whose repertoire ranges from instrumental electronica to experimental music\, ambient\, and techno. In his practice\, Fofana explores identity\, diaspora\, and migration\, reflecting his translocal experience from Sierra Leone and Guinea to the United States. His artistic vision is deeply influenced by the various sounds and cultures he has encountered along his journey. \nInvernomuto is the name under which Simone Bertuzzi and Simone Trabucchi have been operating since 2003. Invernomuto tends to think openly\, developing different projects that take the form of moving images\, sounds\, performative actions\, and editorial activities\, within the context of a practice defined by the both dispersed and precise use of different media. \nLea Porsager intertwines fabulation and speculation with a variety of expressive means\, including film\, sculpture\, photography\, and text. Her works embrace themes such as science\, politics\, feminism\, and esotericism.

DESCRIPTION:A lecture-concert on the theme The Swan Song \nLive Collection \nThe sixth and final Live Collection event for the year 2024 is a lecture-concert on the theme of The Swan Song. Mario Calisi on piano and baritone Chenjie Lì will perform pieces by Franz Schubert\, Vincenzo Bellini\, Edvard Grieg and Igor Stravinsky. This will be followed by a special tour that will lead the public to discover works\, collections and stories related to the theme. \n  \n \nMario Calisi\nPianist\, composer\, conductor. He is a musician\, scholar and teacher acknowledged by international critics. Since 2009\, he has been teaching at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ in Milan. He has taught ‘Studio della strumentazione applicata alla partitura’ in the Master of Musicology Degree Course at the University of Milan. Among his many honours\, he was awarded the title ‘Grand Officier de l’Ordre Mondiale de la Science Musicale’ in Geneva in 1994. He has performed in Italy\, France\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Austria\, Portugal\, Poland\, Lichtenstein\, Bulgaria\, Brazil and Croatia\, where he has released concert recordings for radio and television. W. Stettler\, musicologist and music critic\, described him as an “eclectic\, profound\, coherent musician… Mario Calisi\, a diamond-sounding pianist\, fascinates and enraptures even the most demanding audience… His sense of metrics and adherence to tempi recalls Glen Gould in his charm.” \n  \n \nChenjie Lì\nHe is professor of singing at the Sichuan University of Culture and Arts (China) and president of the ORPHEUS Association in Milan. Lina Mangiacapre and Le Nemesiache\, 1977 \nIl mare ci ha chiamate\, dir. Lina Mangiacapre and Le Nemesiache\, 1978 \n  \nGiulia Damiani is an artist and writer working with performance. Her research combines body\, place and feminist creative methods to reach fault lines in language and context. \nHer new performance Heart Brake bears witness to how a feeling can be a character and a place we live in\, peaking into the crevice of the breaking heart. In this extract from a work-in-progress Giulia Damiani articulates the voice of the main character\, historically a folk figure silenced by patriarchal violence. The performance explores physicality of vocal registers beyond gender binaries while embodying the sounding and imagery of manual rock-splitting. Stricken\, different kinds of bodies vibrate. \nThe folk singing traditions surrounding this ancient profession are reworked to reveal disruptive narratives registered in orality. The choreographic score emerges in the movement between breath\, voice and song; signalling the subversive irony that is experienced in the path to setting oneself\, and each other\, free. \nIn 2022 Giulia Damiani completed her practice-based PhD at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, writing about the feminist group Le Nemesiache from Naples. \nFollowing the performance two short films by Le Nemesiache will be screened: Le sibille (1977) and Il mare ci ha chiamate (1978). \nThis performance project has developed in partnership with Centrale Fies \nThe event is part of Vibrant Natures. DESCRIPTION:26 January 2025\nTurin\nh. 11:00 – 15:00 at Orti Generali\nStrada Castello di Mirafiori 38/15\, 10135 Torino \nTorrenti di Umidi Nodi is a series of three workshops conceived by the artist Derek MF Di Fabio\, taking place at Orti Generali on January 26\, February 22\, and 23.\nIn the workshops stories of edges and bodies of water will intertwine. Starting from the ever-shifting context redrawn by the Sangone River\, the workshops aim to connect personal narratives and historical experiences\, reflecting on the material consequences and transformations tied to the definition of a mutable body.For centuries\, river courses have shaped the morphology of places\, later captured and crystallized through urban development. The partitioning and privatization of common lands have carved divisions among people\, while economic policies have dictated who has access and who can shape justice.\nThe Sangone River has defined the boundaries of Orti Generali; its shifting banks require maintenance to prevent floods and debris from damaging the riverbed\, surrounding spaces\, and its ecosystems.\nThe presence of anthropic embankments also speaks to the human alteration of the land\, echoing the construction of fences\, walls\, and boundaries to delineate property and belonging.\nThe river\, as an essential water resource for the territory\, is a common good for human and non-human communities alike. The example and history of its exploitation and privatization serve as a starting point for reflecting on how the concept of otherness is born: demarcation gives rise to dynamics of exclusion and separation. What was once shared is now subjected to economic policies that enforce clear distinctions between mine and yours\, between us and them\, between right and wrong.\nThus\, the Sangone becomes a starting point for reflecting on the idea of the commons\, the responsibilities associated with its stewardship\, and the accountability required of those who are part of a community—commitments that extend both civically and ecologically.\nThe river is both a geopolitical and geological subject. Observing\, drawing close\, and perhaps understanding its edges—while considering its movement and the cycles of its waters—means looking closely at the fragile and exploited balance of relationships between the environment and the communities inhabiting it.The January 26 workshop is the first episode of a story that will unfold over the winter. During this session\, we will explore the Sangone’s riverbanks and the territory of Orti Generali through which it flows. We will collect and rework texts. We will shape these narratives using willows\, elms\, and other vegetation. We will learn to weave plants and stories. This exercise will continue and evolve in subsequent workshops on February 22 and 23.Participation is open to all and free. Over the past ten years\, these two artists have explored and investigated the notions of horror\, terror\, and “bad taste” in popular culture through a series of moving-image practices. Their interest in observing and dissecting social\, technological\, and ecological issues is rooted in Indonesia’s landscape and social dynamics. The studio produces works that embody a deviant\, experimental aesthetic\, while remaining aware of the planet’s ecological state. \nGrowing up on campy horror cinema of the ’80s and ’90s\, science fiction pulp literature\, ghost stories\, the underground scene\, Indonesian soap operas\, and engaging in radical politics and indigenous movements\, Natasha and Riar transform the codes of B-grade media and popular culture to create fictional narratives in which ecological and social issues are dissected in an abstract and occasionally “bad taste” manner. Recently\, they have referred to their work as a “new style of pessimism\,” a term reflecting both their artistic practice and their pessimistic stance on social and ecological conditions in Indonesia—and beyond. \nIn this screening\, New Pessimism presents four works\, all examining the relationship between humans\, technology\, and the land beneath their feet. Two of these films\, Garden Amidst the Flame and Other Tomorrows Never Known by Natasha Tontey\, centre on the dynamics of the Minahasa indigenous community in North Sulawesi\, Indonesia—Natasha’s place of origin. These works explore how the community perceives technology and ritual\, portrayed through a campy\, maximalist visual style. The other two films\, Tellurian Drama and Fossilis by Riar Rizaldi\, focus on land\, colonialism\, the future\, and technology (both ancient and futuristic). Collectively\, these four works illustrate a vibrant\, intricate\, and dramatic interplay between landscape and humanity. \n\n\n\nThe event is part of Vibrant Natures. Please click here to register this link. \nAfter the first workshop in January\, the journey of Torrenti di Umidi Nodi continues with two new sessions at Orti Generali. Starting by exploring the context of the Sangone river and its constantly changing banks\, with Derek MF Di Fabio we will weave stories\, texts and plants to reflect on bodies of water\, commons and abolitionist practices. Participation is open to all and free. \n\nTorrenti di Umidi Nodi is a series of three workshops conceived by the artist Derek MF Di Fabio\, taking place at Orti Generali on January 26\, February 22\, and 23.\nIn the workshops stories of edges and bodies of water will intertwine. Starting from the ever-shifting context redrawn by the Sangone River\, the workshops aim to connect personal narratives and historical experiences\, reflecting on the material consequences and transformations tied to the definition of a mutable body. \nFor centuries\, river courses have shaped the morphology of places\, later captured and crystallized through urban development. The partitioning and privatization of common lands have carved divisions among people\, while economic policies have dictated who has access and who can shape justice.\nThe Sangone River has defined the boundaries of Orti Generali; its shifting banks require maintenance to prevent floods and debris from damaging the riverbed\, surrounding spaces\, and its ecosystems.\nThe presence of anthropic embankments also speaks to the human alteration of the land\, echoing the construction of fences\, walls\, and boundaries to delineate property and belonging.\nThe river\, as an essential water resource for the territory\, is a common good for human and non-human communities alike. The example and history of its exploitation and privatization serve as a starting point for reflecting on how the concept of otherness is born: demarcation gives rise to dynamics of exclusion and separation. What was once shared is now subjected to economic policies that enforce clear distinctions between mine and yours\, between us and them\, between right and wrong.\nThus\, the Sangone becomes a starting point for reflecting on the idea of the commons\, the responsibilities associated with its stewardship\, and the accountability required of those who are part of a community—commitments that extend both civically and ecologically.\nThe river is both a geopolitical and geological subject. Observing\, drawing close\, and perhaps understanding its edges—while considering its movement and the cycles of its waters—means looking closely at the fragile and exploited balance of relationships between the environment and the communities inhabiting it. \nThe January 26 workshop is the first episode of a story that will unfold over the winter. During this session\, we will explore the Sangone’s riverbanks and the territory of Orti Generali through which it flows. We will collect and rework texts. We will shape these narratives using willows\, elms\, and other vegetation. We will learn to weave plants and stories. This exercise will continue and evolve in subsequent workshops on February 22 and 23. \nThose who take part in the first workshop are encouraged to join the February 22 and 23 sessions\, though continuation is not mandatory. \n\nThis workshop is part of Vibrant Natures. After touring L’Aquila\, Verona\, and Ghiffa\, the show returns to Rivoli with a tribute to Rebecca Horn’s exhibition\, highlighting the profound connection between body\, movement\, and nature. \nWriting through the works exhibited in the Manica Lunga of Castello di Rivoli\, each action is a fragment\, the representation of contrasting emotions—passion and anxiety\, hope and love—among archetypes and moments of life.
