SUMMARY:Marianne Heier\, This is What Creates the Seasons and the Passing of the Year\, and That Rules over All Visible Things
DESCRIPTION:Gneiss quarry Morina di Montoso\, Bagnolo Piemonte (CN) \n  \nAs part of the ABITARE IL MINERALE project\, produced by a.titolo in collaboration with the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, on Saturday\, May 6\, in the spectacular setting of the gneiss quarry Morina di Montoso\, found 1\,300 meters above sea level\, the Traveling Symposium will begin with the performance by the Norwegian artist Marianne Heier\, This is What Creates the Seasons and the Passing of the Year\, and That Rules over All Visible Things. With a title that alludes to the myth of Plato’s cave\, Heier explores the role of art in Western culture through a parallel between an aesthetic and political dimension from Antiquity to today\, touching upon some of the key questions that concern our contemporaneity\, marked by the crisis of the democratic paradigm. \nThe performance\, by the artist with the dance collective Kunstgress\, stages six iconic sculptures of art history like the Nike of Samothrace or the Laocoön group\, interpreted by four dancers dressed in technical sportswear. Like a guide who accompanies visitors inside a museum or an archeological site\, similarly\, the artist leads the public into the cave while reciting a text inspired by\, among others\, writings from Michelangelo Buonarroti\, the art historian Ernst Gombrich\, the feminist theorist Griselda Pollock\, and the Norwegian poet Tor Ulven. In her words for the audience\, Heier engages each “sculpture”\, comparing Greek-ancient statuary and defining Western canons and socio-political structures. The text highlights how the aesthetic development of sculpture—from the archaic period (600–480 B.C.) to the classical style (480–330 B.C.) and the Hellenistic age (323–50 B.C.)—engages dynamism and the presence of physical and somatic details that increase hand in hand with democratic development and individual participation in political life. The point of view of the guide—Marianne Heier—constantly shifts in the cave/cavea\, emphasizing the many interpretations of art history and its meanings. \nThe performance\, which underlines the importance of art for humanity and its role in history\, indirectly explores the conditions of contemporary art practice related to its autonomy and survival on a local and international level. In the context of the ABITARE IL MINERALE project\, this performance alludes to political\, aesthetic\, and narrative potentials that inhabit matter\, be it either the immanent mass of a mountain or the structure of a society. \n  \nABITARE IL MINERALE offers a reflection on overcoming an anthropocentric outlook in our relationship with our habitat and on the concept of creativity in light of new philosophical and scientific theories that have extended the notion of agency—that is\, the “ability to act”—to the non-human\, inorganic world\, by considering matter\, human beings\, and their communication tools in interdependent relations. From observing processes of matter formation and transformation to those concerning human society\, between the Greek agorà and the virtual one where new forms of the democratic paradigm unfold\, along with its pitfalls\, the project is aimed to be a fluid platform where matter\, in the words of the philosopher Karen Barad\, is “an entanglement of agents\, morphologically active\, responsive\, generative and articulate.” Each event in the Traveling Symposium will attempt to offer different interpretations on issues raised by the ABITARE IL MINERALE project\, aiming to salvage the experience dimension also thanks to the specific locations where the performances and encounters are held. \nThe performance is held by Marianne Heier with the dancers Ida Frømyr Borgen\, Hanne Frostad Håkonsen\, Maaike Croles Fitjar\, and Amanda Bach\, with the collaboration of Tobias Leira on lighting\, Erlend Hogstad on sound\, and Kari Berge on production. Installation technical and logistic support by Lookout Comunicazione ed Eventi. \nThe event is made possible by the contribution of the Arts Council Norway\, KORO Public Art Norway\, OCA Office for Contemporary Art Norway\, Bergenstiftelsen\, Andre Jahres Stiftelse\,Norske Kunstforeninger. \nTThe performance will be held on Saturday\, May 6\, 2017 at two times : at noon and at 2:30 p.m. ( duration : 40′; in Italian). At 1 p.m. participants will be offered a light lunch. \nFree admission to the event. \nReservations required at abitareilminerale@gmail.com \nUpcoming events: \n\nWednesday\, May 17 – conversation between Giuseppe Penone and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev\, Teatro del Castello di Rivoli\nSaturday\, May 27 – dialogue between Giovanni Anselmo and Massimo Bartolini\, Rocca e geosito di Verrua Savoia (TO)\nFriday\, June 16 – lectio magistralis by the American philosopher Karen Barad\, Teatro del Castello di Rivoli\nSaturday\, June 17 – cognitive exploration The Quarry Experience\, with Andrea Caretto and Raffaella Spagna and the geologist Marco Giardino\, gypsum quarry of Moncucco Torinese and clay pit of Munlab Ecomuseo dell’Argilla di Cambiano (TO).\n\n ABITARE IL MINERALE is a project by a.titolo in collaboration with the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, curated by Francesca Comisso\, Luisa Perlo\, and Marianna Vecellio\, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo as part of the “Ora! Linguaggi contemporanei\, produzioni innovative” competition.

SUMMARY:Anna Boghiguian. The Studio's Artist
DESCRIPTION:curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Marianna Vecellio \n  \nCastello di Rivoli\, third floor – room 38 \n  \nFor the first time in the history of the Castello di Rivoli\, an artist’s studio will be recreated in a room of the Savoy residence. \nA room in the Museum will be inaugurated on Monday\, May 8 that anticipates the world-premiere retrospective by the Egyptian-Canadian artist of Armenian origins\, Anna Boghiguian (Cairo\, 1946)\, winner of the Golden Lion for the best pavilion (Armenia) at the 56. Venice Biennale in 2015. \nThe project stems from the artist’s residence (for over one month) at the Museum\, during which she moved her studio from Cairo to Rivoli and worked on a new series devoted to the time the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spent in Turin between 1888 and 1889. \nIn addition to recreating Boghiguian’s atelier in Cairo—the interiors are overflowing with works and drawings\, pigment bottles\, rugs\, Oriental objects\, and a spacious terrace overlooking the Nile\, with flocks of flying birds—the room also presents her early works that have never been shown to the public before. \n  \nThis exhibition will be open from May 9 to July 23\, upon request. \n  \nThe retrospective by the artist Anna Boghiguian\, installed on the third floor of the Manica Lunga\, will be inaugurated on September 18\, 2017. \n   \nWhile keeping her studio and home in Cairo\, Boghiguian nomadically lives and works in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the Americas. The daughter of an Armenian clockmaker\, she studied political science and art at the American University in Cairo in the 1960s. She then moved to Canada in 1970 where she studied art and music at Concordia University in Montreal. With interests in literature\, philosophy\, and politics\, Boghiguian is known for her expressionist drawings and paintings\, often executed with hot wax and saturated colors in a spontaneous style. Her works combine figuration and written texts and derive from the observation of social conflicts in the contemporary world of globalization. Her painting is a veritable body\, able to touch all the senses and favor an empathic dimension. \nIn addition to painting\, the artist uses numerous expressive languages like sculpture\, photography\, writing\, and sound. Her collages include objects and cut-outs of printed images. Her installations and site-specific works offer a unique interpretation of the experience of traveling and of human beings in today’s world\, in transit between past and present\, poetry and politics\, a positive outlook on the world and critical observation.

SUMMARY:Tarek Atoui. Conjured Geographies
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Marcella Beccaria \nCastello di Rivoli\, outdoor courtyard \n  \nArtist and electroacoustic composer\, Tarek Atoui creates a new form of art where bodies and machines intermingle and become one. The artist uses self-made computers and electronic paraphernalia to hold interventions\, concerts\, performances\, and workshops. Starting from extensive research on music history and instrumentation\, his artistic practice intentionally focuses on collaborative performances in which improvisation plays a central role. In dialogue with each context\, Atoui’s performances develop through relationships between history\, sounds\, instruments\, and bodies\, showing how music and new technologies can be powerful tools of expression and identity. \nOn the occasion of his first performance in Italy\, at the Castello di Rivoli\, and in anticipation of his first-ever retrospective to be held at the Museum in late 2018\, the artist presents Conjured Geographies\, 2016–2017\, a collage of impromptu sounds that includes memories from his most important sound events: from Metastable Circuit\, presented at dOCUMENTA 13 (2012)\, to On and From Tarab\, realized at Sharjah Art Foundation and at the Serpentine Gallery (2012)\, up to I/E Elefsis\, presented at the archeological site of Eleusis (2015)\, and Dahlem Sessions\, held at the Anthropology Museum of Dahlem during the Berlin Biennale (2014). \nIn the performance Conjured Geographies (duration: 45’)\, the sound material is reconfigured in a heterophony\, taking cue from the tarab in Arab music (from the word tarabi\, meaning “to dance” or “to have fun with music”). In that tradition\, heterophony plays a key role in recreating a psychophysical condition\, inducing a trance or enchantment with the audience. Five or six musicians play at the same time\, although each of them follows the score in his own way. These multiple sonorities with their free interpretation offer the audience the chance to experience the tarab. As explained by the artist: “The tarab is not a music genre but a state of ‘melotrance’ that you reach after being exposed to music for a certain amount of time. The tarab used to happen in courtyards\, where people would come and sit for hours.” \nIn this performance\, Atoui uses a self-made mixer with which he integrates traditional chants with his own voice in order to restore art to its foundations and its function of being “nothing but the mutual articulation\, matter and body—as he states—while collapsing all geographical\, temporal\, and physical boundaries.” \n  \nTarek Atoui (Lebanon\, 1980) moved to Paris in 1998 where he currently lives and works. After his studies in contemporary and electronic music at the French National Conservatory of Reims\, as co-director of the STEIM Studios\, Amsterdam (2008)\, he released his first solo album of live sessions in the “Mort aux Vaches” series for the label Staalplaat. Recent productions and performances have taken place at Tate Modern\, London (2016); Fondation Louis Vuitton\, Paris (2015); Bonniers Konsthall\, Stockholm (2013); Norbergenfestival\, Norbergen\, Sweden (2013); Bik Van Der Pol\, Utrecht\, Holland (2011); New Museum\, New York (2010); Manarat Saadiyat\, United Arab Emirates (2009); La Maison Rouge\, Paris (2009); Today’s Art Festival\, Amsterdam (2007). His latest performances and group exhibitions include Un-drum 3\, La Maison Rouge\, Paris (2010); Below 160\, Salzburg Sommerszene Festival\, Salzburg (2011); La Lutherie\, DIMIs Re-connected\, Metastable Circuit\, dOCUMENTA (13)\, Kassel (2012); La Suite\, Serpentine Gallery\, London (2012); Within\, Sharjah Biennial 11\, Sharjah\, United Arab Emirates (2013); Art or Sound\, Fondazione Prada\, Ca’ Corner della Regina\, Venice (2014). He also took part in the 9th and 11th Sharjah Biennial\, Sharjah\, United Arab Emirates (2009; 2013)\, 9th Mercosul Biennale\, Porto Alegre\, Brazil (2013); 9th Berlin Biennale\, Berlin (2014); Marrakech Biennale\, Morocco (2016). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPress Office Castello di Rivoli \nManuela Vasco | tel. 011.9565209 | press@castellodirivoli.org \nBrunella Manzardo | tel. 011.9565211 | b.manzardo@castellodirivoli.org

SUMMARY:Karen Barad\, Troubling Time/s and Ecologies of Nothingness: Re-turning\, Re-membering\, and Facing the Incalculable | lecture
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\, \nCastello di Rivoli\, Conference Hall \n  \nFor the first time in Italy\, the Castello di Rivoli hosts a conference by the American physicist and feminist philosopher Karen Barad\, one of the most well-known and important figures of international scientific debate. Barad espouses decentering humans and conceiving the world like a series of interactions; she has influenced an entire generation of young artists in the world particularly tied to materiality and immateriality. The event is part of the Abitare il Minerale project. \nKaren Barad promotes Agential Realism\, a reflection that intertwines quantum physics\, ethics\, ontology\, and epistemology\, expanding her research of matter to an attentive and renewed observation of social and political phenomena. By overturning the sense of causality and individuality\, Barad introduces the notion of intra-actions\, operations that constantly reconfigure matter and establish “the definition of differences\, of ‘individual\,’ instead of presuming their existence as being independent and antecedent.” \nFor the conference Troubling Time/s and Ecologies of Nothingness: Re-turning\, Re-membering\, and Facing the Incalculable\, Karen Barad will show how deconstruction dynamics of quantum physics can challenge the modern concept of time by presenting new and radical social and environmental imaginaries. The uncertainty of time\, at the heart of quantum physics\, unsettles “not only research on particle physics and nuclear physics\, but also challenges the traditional interpretation of social phenomena like colonialism\, capitalism\, militarism\, racism\, nationalism\, and environmental destruction.” \nKaren Barad (1956)\, an American physicist and feminist theorist\, is a key protagonist of the contemporary debate. She currently teaches Feminist Studies\, Philosophy\, and the History of Consciousness at the University of California Santa Cruz. She graduated in physics from Stony Brook University in New York\, and then published in 2007 Meeting the Universe Halfway: Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning\, a book that\, while presenting the theory of Agential Realism\, definitively undermines the bases not only of our traditional way of conceiving matter\, but also the dichotomies between nature and culture\, animal and human\, man and woman\, problematizing the social role of science and the nature of ethics. Over the years she has received many honors including in 2016 an honorary doctorate from Gothenburg University\, in Sweden. Since 2016 she has taken part in the project “Decolonizing Early Childhood Discourses: Critical Posthumanism in Higher Education” at the University of Cape Town. She has also held seminars at prestigious universities and institutions\, and participated in 2012 in dOCUMENTA (13) with the text What Is the Measure of Nothingness? Infinity\, Virtuality\, Justice in the catalogue and the series 100 Notes – 100 Thoughts. Book n° 099\, Hatje Cantz Verlag (2012). \n  \nAdmission to the event is free\, but participants are required to register beforehand at abitareilminerale@gmail.com\, or in person on the day of the conference at the Castello di Rivoli. \nThese participants can also take advantage of a reduced-price ticket to the Museum by presenting their e-mail reservation. \nAbitare il Minerale is organized by a.titolo in collaboration with the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, curated by Francesca Comisso\, Luisa Perlo\, and Marianna Vecellio\, with funding by the Compagnia di San Paolo and is part of the “Ora! Linguaggi contemporanei\, produzioni innovative” competition. \n

SUMMARY:OGR - Corte Est Commissions. William Kentridge creates Procession. The Reparationists
DESCRIPTION:The opening of the OGR will coincide with Procession. The Reparationists\, public site-specific installation by South African artist William Kentridge (Johannesburg\, 1955). \nThis is a commission commissioned by Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, supported entirely by the CRT Foundation for Modern and Contemporary Art\, curated and producted by Castello di Rivoli. This work is the first of a series of commissions in the public space of the OGR designed to be accessible from the entire city. The artist creates an installation inspired by the ex-industrial life of the Officine Grandi Riparazioni and composed of a procession of symbolic figures\, which allude to the work of repairing trains and bodies. \n\nOGR \nCorso Castelfidardo\, 22 \n10128 – Torino (TO)

SUMMARY:A conversation with Massimo Bartolini
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the work of the artist\, this conversation will focus on the ability of Massimo Bartolini to create through signs\, objects\, sounds\, and environments the conditions of an experience in which the sensorial is connected to the intangible\, the concrete reality to imagination\, the material to the immaterial. The conversation will start from the beginnings to oscillating floors\, from light architectures to sound landscapes and to recent artworks on the physical and conceptual dimension of sculpture. The Bartolini’s artworks\, in their sensorial and experiential prerogative\, question our relationship with the reality and the modes of our being in the world: feet on earth\, head to the sky\, body\, and perceptions as vehicles. \nAdmission is free but submission is required mailing to abitareilminerale@gmail.com\, or the day of the event at Castello di Rivoli’s ticket office. \nVisitors can also take part in a visit to the retrospective of Anna Boghiguian\, led by curator Marianna Vecellio\, who will explore some of the themes of the exhibition through reading the artist’s texts. A free shuttle departs at 2.30 pm from Turin Piazza Castello and 2.35 from Turin Porta Susa and returns from Castello di Rivoli at 6.10 (free run only for museum ticket holders). \nThe conversation is part of Abitare il Minerale\, a project realized by a.titolo in collaboration with Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, and curated by Francesca Comisso\, Luisa Perlo and Marianna Vecellio\, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo in “ORA! Linguaggi Contemporanei\, Linguaggi Innovativi”.

SUMMARY:Giornata del Contemporaneo Tredicesima edizione
\nhttp://www.amaci.org/gdc/tredicesima-edizione

SUMMARY:Matteo Nucci. Going Home
DESCRIPTION:“You can never go home. \nWhen Odysseus finally wakes up on the island he longed for twenty years\, he doesn’t realize it. When he returns to his palace\, no one except a dog recognizes him—a king so missed yet so forgotten. And when\, after the famous challenge with bow and arrow\, he wipes out all his adversaries—Penelope’s suitors who’ve lived off him for years—at that moment as we sense everything is finally over\, we realize that Odysseus is a new man at home and that\, ultimately\, his Ithaca no longer exists. But maybe it never really existed.” \nMatteo Nucci was born in Rome in 1970. He studied ancient ideas and philosophy and published essays on Empedocles\, Socrates\, and Plato. In 2009\, he translated and edited Plato’s Symposium for Einaudi\, and in 2013\, also for the same publisher\, Le lacrime degli eroi\, a narrative essay on crying in Homer’s world. Novels that have been published by Ponte alle Grazie include: Sono comuni le cose degli amici (2009\, among the five finalists of the Premio Strega)\, Il toro non sbaglia mai (2011)\, È giusto obbedire alla notte (2017\, among the five finalists of the Premio Strega). His stories have appeared in anthologies\, magazines\, and e-books. He has authored cultural reportage works and articles on a regular basis for venerdì di Repubblica which can also be found online at minimaetmoralia.it. He also curates a site devoted to information on and the culture of bulls: www.uominietori.it. \nThis lecture is part of the public programs of the exhibition Anna Boghiguian.

SUMMARY:The House as Museum\, The Museum as House: The Making of Great Collections. International conference
DESCRIPTION:Conference Hall \nTo prepare for the opening of the Cerruti Collection to the public in early 2019\, Castello di Rivoli will be holding an important one-day international conference on 6 March entitled The House as Museum\, The Museum as House: The Making of Great Collections with some of the leading experts in the field. The aim is to stimulate reflection on the importance of reciprocity between museums and private collections in connection with the extraordinary acquisition of the legendary Cerruti Collection – one of the most important private collections in Europe – by the Castello di Rivoli. \nExcept for the large blockbuster museums in major urban centers\, most art museums we know today were originally founded by collectors and art lovers who decided themselves\, or whose heirs decided\, to share their collections with the public. Either with an educational mission of civic society building or in order to create a legacy through which their memory might be preserved by future generations\, these museums are active around the world today. Some of them were founded by artists and other intellectuals\, whose estates have thus become public. The modern “white cube” detached this domestic and private origin from a sense of the autonomy of the artwork. While today new museums appear all over the world\, artists and visitors seek out the personality and domesticity of the exhibition spaces\, as a way of grounding their experiences in life. \nDuring this conference\, the directors and representatives of illustrious Italian and international institutions − comprising the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles\, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston\, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.\, the Judd Foundation in Marfa and New York\, Sir John Soane’s Museum in London\, the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris\, the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna\, the Villa Borghese in Rome\, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan\, the Villa e Collezione Panza in Varese and the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli in Turin − will discuss the growing importance of dialog between private collections and museums and its impact on the fundamental relationship between contemporary art and the legacy of the past. The participants will talk about their experiences and the close and positive relations between museums and private collections born out of the drive for knowledge peculiar to art. \nThe conference is the fruit of the important agreement signed in 2017 with the Fondazione Francesco Federico Cerruti per l’Arte\, whereby Italy’s leading museum of contemporary art holds responsibility for the conservation\, study\, promotion and management of the extraordinary collection built up by the entrepreneur\, industrialist and collector of rare sensitivity Francesco Federico Cerruti\, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. Once renovated\, the villa built by Cerruti to house his works in Rivoli\, close to the Castello\, will present this artistic heritage to the public in 2019. \nBetween the 1950s and his death in 2015\, Francesco Federico Cerruti built up a collection of approximately three hundred paintings and sculptures\, ranging from medieval times to the present\, as well as nearly two hundred rare and ancient books with bindings and gilded illustrations\, and over three hundred items of furnishing\, including carpets and desks by renowned cabinetmakers. Revealing an extraordinary development of artistic acumen\, this priceless private collection includes works by Segno di Bonaventura\, Bernardo Daddi\, Pontormo\, Ribera\, Zurbarán\, Renoir\, Modigliani\, Kandinsky\, Giacometti\, Picasso\, Klee\, Severini\, Boccioni\, Balla and Magritte all the way up to Bacon\, Burri\, Fontana\, Warhol\, De Dominicis and Paolini. \nCarolyn Christov-Bakargiev\, director of the Castello di Rivoli\, is firmly convinced that the Collection Cerruti “will become a driving force of creativity for the museum to create a unique dialog between the past and contemporary art.” \nHolders of tickets to the museum will be admitted to the conference free of charge on a first come\, first served basis. \nThe historic stately rooms on the first floor of the museum house the exhibition Giorgio de Chirico. Major Works from the Collection of Francesco Federico Cerruti\, drafted by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Marcella Beccaria\, while the Manica Lunga presents Metamorphoses – Let Everything Happen to You\, a group exhibition of works by emerging artists drafted by Chus Martínez. \n  \nRivoli Express Shuttle\nThe Rivoli Express shuttle service will operate for the conference with the following timetable: \n9.15 – Piazza Carlina (corner of Via Maria Vittoria) \n9.25 – Piazza XVIII Dicembre (direction Corso San Martino) \n18.00 – Departure from the Castello di Rivoli for Turin \nPassengers will be admitted free of charge until capacity is reached.
