SUMMARY:OGR - Corte Est Commissions. William Kentridge creates Procession. The Reparationists
DESCRIPTION:The opening of the OGR will coincide with Procession. The Reparationists\, public site-specific installation by South African artist William Kentridge (Johannesburg\, 1955). \nThis is a commission commissioned by Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, supported entirely by the CRT Foundation for Modern and Contemporary Art\, curated and producted by Castello di Rivoli. This work is the first of a series of commissions in the public space of the OGR designed to be accessible from the entire city. The artist creates an installation inspired by the ex-industrial life of the Officine Grandi Riparazioni and composed of a procession of symbolic figures\, which allude to the work of repairing trains and bodies. \n\nOGR \nCorso Castelfidardo\, 22 \n10128 – Torino (TO)

SUMMARY:A conversation with Massimo Bartolini
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the work of the artist\, this conversation will focus on the ability of Massimo Bartolini to create through signs\, objects\, sounds\, and environments the conditions of an experience in which the sensorial is connected to the intangible\, the concrete reality to imagination\, the material to the immaterial. The conversation will start from the beginnings to oscillating floors\, from light architectures to sound landscapes and to recent artworks on the physical and conceptual dimension of sculpture. The Bartolini’s artworks\, in their sensorial and experiential prerogative\, question our relationship with the reality and the modes of our being in the world: feet on earth\, head to the sky\, body\, and perceptions as vehicles. \nAdmission is free but submission is required mailing to abitareilminerale@gmail.com\, or the day of the event at Castello di Rivoli’s ticket office. \nVisitors can also take part in a visit to the retrospective of Anna Boghiguian\, led by curator Marianna Vecellio\, who will explore some of the themes of the exhibition through reading the artist’s texts. A free shuttle departs at 2.30 pm from Turin Piazza Castello and 2.35 from Turin Porta Susa and returns from Castello di Rivoli at 6.10 (free run only for museum ticket holders). \nThe conversation is part of Abitare il Minerale\, a project realized by a.titolo in collaboration with Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, and curated by Francesca Comisso\, Luisa Perlo and Marianna Vecellio\, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo in “ORA! Linguaggi Contemporanei\, Linguaggi Innovativi”.

SUMMARY:Giornata del Contemporaneo Tredicesima edizione
\nhttp://www.amaci.org/gdc/tredicesima-edizione

SUMMARY:Matteo Nucci. Going Home
DESCRIPTION:“You can never go home. \nWhen Odysseus finally wakes up on the island he longed for twenty years\, he doesn’t realize it. When he returns to his palace\, no one except a dog recognizes him—a king so missed yet so forgotten. And when\, after the famous challenge with bow and arrow\, he wipes out all his adversaries—Penelope’s suitors who’ve lived off him for years—at that moment as we sense everything is finally over\, we realize that Odysseus is a new man at home and that\, ultimately\, his Ithaca no longer exists. But maybe it never really existed.” \nMatteo Nucci was born in Rome in 1970. He studied ancient ideas and philosophy and published essays on Empedocles\, Socrates\, and Plato. In 2009\, he translated and edited Plato’s Symposium for Einaudi\, and in 2013\, also for the same publisher\, Le lacrime degli eroi\, a narrative essay on crying in Homer’s world. Novels that have been published by Ponte alle Grazie include: Sono comuni le cose degli amici (2009\, among the five finalists of the Premio Strega)\, Il toro non sbaglia mai (2011)\, È giusto obbedire alla notte (2017\, among the five finalists of the Premio Strega). His stories have appeared in anthologies\, magazines\, and e-books. He has authored cultural reportage works and articles on a regular basis for venerdì di Repubblica which can also be found online at minimaetmoralia.it. He also curates a site devoted to information on and the culture of bulls: www.uominietori.it. \nThis lecture is part of the public programs of the exhibition Anna Boghiguian.

SUMMARY:The House as Museum\, The Museum as House: The Making of Great Collections. International conference
DESCRIPTION:Conference Hall \nTo prepare for the opening of the Cerruti Collection to the public in early 2019\, Castello di Rivoli will be holding an important one-day international conference on 6 March entitled The House as Museum\, The Museum as House: The Making of Great Collections with some of the leading experts in the field. The aim is to stimulate reflection on the importance of reciprocity between museums and private collections in connection with the extraordinary acquisition of the legendary Cerruti Collection – one of the most important private collections in Europe – by the Castello di Rivoli. \nExcept for the large blockbuster museums in major urban centers\, most art museums we know today were originally founded by collectors and art lovers who decided themselves\, or whose heirs decided\, to share their collections with the public. Either with an educational mission of civic society building or in order to create a legacy through which their memory might be preserved by future generations\, these museums are active around the world today. Some of them were founded by artists and other intellectuals\, whose estates have thus become public. The modern “white cube” detached this domestic and private origin from a sense of the autonomy of the artwork. While today new museums appear all over the world\, artists and visitors seek out the personality and domesticity of the exhibition spaces\, as a way of grounding their experiences in life. \nDuring this conference\, the directors and representatives of illustrious Italian and international institutions − comprising the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles\, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston\, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.\, the Judd Foundation in Marfa and New York\, Sir John Soane’s Museum in London\, the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris\, the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna\, the Villa Borghese in Rome\, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan\, the Villa e Collezione Panza in Varese and the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli in Turin − will discuss the growing importance of dialog between private collections and museums and its impact on the fundamental relationship between contemporary art and the legacy of the past. The participants will talk about their experiences and the close and positive relations between museums and private collections born out of the drive for knowledge peculiar to art. \nThe conference is the fruit of the important agreement signed in 2017 with the Fondazione Francesco Federico Cerruti per l’Arte\, whereby Italy’s leading museum of contemporary art holds responsibility for the conservation\, study\, promotion and management of the extraordinary collection built up by the entrepreneur\, industrialist and collector of rare sensitivity Francesco Federico Cerruti\, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. Once renovated\, the villa built by Cerruti to house his works in Rivoli\, close to the Castello\, will present this artistic heritage to the public in 2019. \nBetween the 1950s and his death in 2015\, Francesco Federico Cerruti built up a collection of approximately three hundred paintings and sculptures\, ranging from medieval times to the present\, as well as nearly two hundred rare and ancient books with bindings and gilded illustrations\, and over three hundred items of furnishing\, including carpets and desks by renowned cabinetmakers. Revealing an extraordinary development of artistic acumen\, this priceless private collection includes works by Segno di Bonaventura\, Bernardo Daddi\, Pontormo\, Ribera\, Zurbarán\, Renoir\, Modigliani\, Kandinsky\, Giacometti\, Picasso\, Klee\, Severini\, Boccioni\, Balla and Magritte all the way up to Bacon\, Burri\, Fontana\, Warhol\, De Dominicis and Paolini. \nCarolyn Christov-Bakargiev\, director of the Castello di Rivoli\, is firmly convinced that the Collection Cerruti “will become a driving force of creativity for the museum to create a unique dialog between the past and contemporary art.” \nHolders of tickets to the museum will be admitted to the conference free of charge on a first come\, first served basis. \nThe historic stately rooms on the first floor of the museum house the exhibition Giorgio de Chirico. Major Works from the Collection of Francesco Federico Cerruti\, drafted by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Marcella Beccaria\, while the Manica Lunga presents Metamorphoses – Let Everything Happen to You\, a group exhibition of works by emerging artists drafted by Chus Martínez. \n  \nRivoli Express Shuttle\nThe Rivoli Express shuttle service will operate for the conference with the following timetable: \n9.15 – Piazza Carlina (corner of Via Maria Vittoria) \n9.25 – Piazza XVIII Dicembre (direction Corso San Martino) \n18.00 – Departure from the Castello di Rivoli for Turin \nPassengers will be admitted free of charge until capacity is reached.

SUMMARY:Reinhard Mucha „Die Verwandlung“ „The Metamorphosis“\, 2016
DESCRIPTION:Reinhard Mucha \n„Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis” \nEncounter with the artist in conversation with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev \nand presentation of the work \nTuesday\, June 19\, 6 pm \nCastello di Rivoli\, Room 19 \n  \nOn Tuesday\, June 19 at 6 pm the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea will hold an encounter with Reinhard Mucha (Düsseldorf\, 1950)\, in conversation with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev\, Director of the Museum\, for the installation of „Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis.” The work integrates the imposing installation Mutterseelenallein (Solitudine)\, 1989–2009\, one of the German artist’s masterpieces\, on view on the second floor of the Museum; the work became part of the Permanent Collection in 2009 thanks to the Fondazione CRT per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. \nThe German artist Reinhard Mucha (Düsseldorf\, 1950) is one of Europe’s most influential artists from the second half of the twentieth century. Active in Düsseldorf\, where he studied at the Academy\, Mucha began his career in the mid-1980s with a kind of sculpture alluding to architecture and focusing on the empty and obsolete spaces of the industrial world—indirectly referencing a modernity characterized in the twentieth century by social and political catastrophes. Mucha sheds light\, on the one hand\, on a sense of loss and mourning with respect to the optimism of the grand modern project and\, on the other hand\, the need to rediscover\, through art\, forms of respect for the work of that same modern industrial society\, perceived by the artist in all its contradictions. \n  \n„Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis” is a model-sculpture that references the installation Mutterseelenallein. As is the practice of the artist\, who is interested in the idea of “showing the show\,” the model represents a further analysis of the mechanisms related to presenting and displaying an artwork in a museum. \n  \n„Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis” integrates and completes Mutterseelenallein. By joining the words “mother\,” “soul\,” and “solo\,” the German title of the installation Mutterseelenallein is an expression that indicates a specific state of mind relating to extreme\, desolate solitude. Installed for the first time in Naples in 1989\, the work is composed of sixteen large cases in felt\, metal\, and glass that bear photographs of empty chairs. The cases alternate with neon ceiling lights. At the center of the room we find piles of old parquet flooring with more ceiling lights and electric cables. These elements\, which are normally used in mounting art exhibitions\, are\, for the artist\, an integral part of the work’s materials. \n  \nInspired by old railway signs\, the cases evoke a past of great industrial fervor and\, at the same time\, a feeling of immobility\, typical of museum display cases. Mucha uses them while stressing the weight and drama of modern history—its projects but also its demise. In Mutterseelenallein\, at the center of all the display cases\, except one\, we find a black-and-white photo of an empty chair. All different\, the seats are the ones used by custodians or tired visitors to a small art exhibition in Düsseldorf\, visited and photographed by the artist the day before it closed. The chairs suggest a big and profound emptiness\, the solitude of each individual\, while celebrating the poetry of expectation. \n  \nLike living organisms\, Mucha’s works grow and change\, marking the time of their own display experience: after the show in Naples\, at the Galleria Lia Rumma\, Mutterseelenallein was installed for many years at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt. If in Frankfurt the work already bore ceiling lights that were part of the gallery furnishings in Naples\, for the event in Rivoli in 2009\, Mucha also added the parquet piles\, taking from the German museum parts of the installation walls\, which evoked the floor of that museum. For the work at Rivoli\, also in 2009\, Mucha placed resin walls behind the cases\, asking for them to be made by the same artisans who had crafted the museum floors. \n  \n“Presenting „Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis” today\, in 2018\, in the context of Mutterseelenallein\, Mucha has realized a long-imagined project\,” states Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. “The artist reminds us that works of art don’t exist out of time but rather mark time through their transformations\, marking as a consequence our time. The work is a constant ‘unfinished’ and each element may be followed by others.” \nReinhard Mucha’s work\, „Die Verwandlung\,“ 2016 “The Metamorphosis” was donated to the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea by Marco Rossi. \n  \nREINHARD MUCHA\n(Düsseldorf\, 1950) \n„Die Verwandlung“\, 2016 \n“The Metamorphosis” \n4 LCD monitors\, 4 monitor supports\, single-channel animated video loop with recordings of the sounds at Macy’s New York\, 4 multimedia player\, 4 SD cards\, CF reader (sound)\, Netgear switch\, electrical and electronic equipment\, cable reel\, different kinds of wood (found objects)\, block board\, plywood\, hard panels\, aluminum edging\, fluorescent light lamps\, fluorescent tubes\, Perspex\, foot rest (found object)\, 16 empty chocolate boxes\, felt \nvariable dimensions \nCastello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, Rivoli-Torino \nGift of Marco Rossi\, Turin \n  \nMutterseelenallein (Solitudine / All Alone)\, 1979 [1989] [1991] [2009] \nunassembled wall panels\, wood\, cork\, felt\, fluorescent light lamps\, electric cable\, ground wire\, electrical clamps\, retractable extension cord\, aluminum\, glass\, enamel painting on back of glass\, silver gelatin-bromide prints\, print on cut cardboard\, Sintocret flooring with epoxy resin and ceramic quartz. \noverall dimensions 583 x 982 x 741 cm \nFondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT\, 2007 \nOn gratuitous loan to the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea\, Rivoli-Torino \n  \n  \nBiography\n  \nReinhard Mucha (Düsseldorf\, 1950) is seen as one of the greatest artists from the second-half of the twentieth century and represented Germany at the 1990 Venice Biennale. \nMucha began his career as an artist at the Academy in Düsseldorf in the late 1970s. Representatives from each space are invited to attend and to spend the night under the stars in tents mounted in the garden of the Manica Lunga\, generously offered by Combo. The event will begin on Saturday 7 July at 3 PM and continue until 7 PM in the Castello’s theatre (upon invitation only). On Sunday 8 July between 11.30AM and 7 PM it will continue and be open to the public in the Castello’s Theatre and Conference Room. Artist run spaces\, project spaces\, residencies\, cultural agencies\, young galleries have marked their presence on the macro-system of art by asserting their role as promoters and researchers of the most cutting-edge Italian and international art. They have also negotiated new ways of relating to audiences and public institutions. In recognition of the importance of these spaces and of their continual efforts across Italy\, the Castello di Rivoli has dedicated a weekend to reflect on these spaces’ objectives and on the best strategies to grow and become consolidated. \nSupercondominio takes its name from a kind of gathering that regulates the management of two or more buildings within the same premises. Supercondominio invites us to rethink models of coexistence in order to envision new spaces that may share devices and objectives. \nThe gathering will be structured according to three moments: \n–      A private assembly punctuated by moments of reflection on themes that affect non-profit spaces such as management\, curating\, sustainability and economics. \n–       An evening dedicated to representatives from each invited space that will be hosted by the museum. \n–       A marathon of presentations free to the public during which each invitee can present their projects and activities \nCombo\, the strategic partner of Supercondominio\, is a hosting project for travelers that offers private and shared rooms\, communal spaces and a radio station\, in distinctive historic buildings in the liveliest neighborhoods of major Italian cities. On the ground floor they house a bar\, a restaurant and multifunctional spaces dedicated to art\, music and culture. The floors above feature specially designed functional and fairly priced rooms. The identity of the entire project is a web radio that transmits the voice of Combo’s universe\, which is physically present in Milan\, Turin\, Rome and online. Combo is an incubator\, site of cultural production\, it’s a strongly musical and artistic lab open to experimentation where travelers from the whole world meet with locals in an informal and international setting. In 2019 they will inaugurate buildings in Turin\, Milan\, Rome\, Venice and Bologna to then continue with a capillary expansion with the opening of 13 Combos in 3 years across Italy. \n  \nStrategic partner: \n \n  \n
