This exhibition drew on works taken from two of France\u2019s most important contemporary art institutions, the Mus\u00e9e national d\u2019art moderne \u2013 Centre Georges Pompidou and the FNAC (Fonds National d\u2019Art Contemporain), to provide a survey of the most significant moments in the history of contemporary photography. It also highlighted the strenuous efforts of those who have fought for photography to be acknowledged as an art form by arts institutions.<\/p>\n
The exhibition covers the entire spectrum of ways in which artists have utilised the medium of photography, tracing the work of some of Europe\u2019s leading avant-garde artists. For the Dadaists and Surrealists, for example, photography became much more than a simple instrument for recording the phases of a work-in-progress, but a powerful technological and visual tool for creating new images.<\/p>\n
From the late 1970s onwards, photography has been central to the international art debate, a testament to the ever-growing vitality of the medium.<\/p>\n
The selected artists demonstrate the innumerable ways photography can be used to investigate our perception of reality, opening it up to a multiplicity of interpretations.<\/p>\n
