Whether published in books or exhibited in art galleries and major museums, the photographic images of Anton Corbijn (Strijen, Holland, 1955) portray members of the music and youth culture in which the artist is a passionate participant. The author of album covers and photo shoots, the director of video clips, Corbijn does more than just depict personalities in the star system; he interprets them, and in the process shows that he possesses a strong sense of composition and form, as well as an undisputed mastery of technique. In his often monochrome images of rock performers on the London scene, created from 1975 to 1988, he turns his attention to facial expressions, the position of the body and gestures, almost always outside the official canons of portraiture. Corbijn intervenes in the printing process, obtaining strongly contrasted images that emphasize the psychological aspect of the subject, creating, with almost pictorial effects in the relationships between white and black, specific atmospheres in both outdoor and interior settings. A similar formal process is more accentuated in recent works, devoted to movie stars and writers of the beat generation, where the outlines of the images seem distorted or retouched as if by effects of solarization in the printing process.<\/p>\n
