Following the first and second edition of the program Philosophy in Residence organized by the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in collaboration with CRRI – Castello di Rivoli Research Center, the Museum is pleased to welcome Emanuele Coccia as Philosopher in Residence for the year 2023.

The program Philosophy in Residence aims to integrate philosophical research within the activities of Castello di Rivoli, planning a series of lectures open to the public and a program conceived for the Digital Cosmos, the virtual venue of the Museum. It allows international scholars to deepen their philosophical investigation and consulting the archives of CRRI, Castello di Rivoli Library, and exploring the collection of Francesco Federico Cerruti in the Villa Cerruti.

In 2021, Leonardo Caffo, Professor of Media and Fashion Aesthetics at the New Academy of Fine Arts (NABA) in Milan, developed a series of podcasts entitled The disappearance of the public, in which he focused on the idea of the public, its disappearance, its different characterizations and qualities. The podcast can be listened to on Digital Cosmos. The research developed by Caffo will feed into I Quaderni del CRRI #2, a publication to be published in autumn 2023.

In 2022, Federico Campagna focused on the theme of the Mediterranean creative imagination, with particular attention to the period between Late Antiquity and the beginning of Modernity. The results of the research were presented in the context of a series of conferences held at the Museum and on the occasion of the XXXIV edition of the International Book Fair, the podcast Il Mare Tra Le Terre: una storia dell’immaginata Mediterranea and they will become part of his forthcoming book.

Coccia’s first activity in the framework of the program Philosophy in Residence 2023 is a lecture in the context of the conference Energy cultures. Energies, imaginaries, currencies, and nuclear horizons of the planet. A 21st-century meeting of artists, scientists, and philosophers on 23 September 2023. In an attempt to explore potential scenarios of energy co-evolution between different species, the conference investigates living matter starting from its atoms, by their intertwining, by their communication and interaction, attempting to question the static and conventional postulates on energy. Coccia will attempt to rethink energy paradigms: from classical thermodynamics, for which the stake is the maintenance of a balance, to alchemy, where every living and non-living being is potentially capable of storing, releasing and multiplying energy received.

The Philosophy in Residence is a program from an idea of Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev with the coordination of Giulia Colletti.

The program is part of the activities of the CRRI – Castello di Rivoli Research Centre, supported by Regione Piemonte and Compagnia di San Paolo.
