Andrea Viliani

Andrea Viliani, art historian and curator graduated in 1999 from the University of Turin, is the Head and Curator of the Castello di Rivoli Research Center (CRRI), the new department of the Museum – where, from 2000 to 2005, Viliani had held the position of Assistant curator – aimed at the research, collection and enhancement of archival materials by artists, curators, critics, gallery owners and collectors. Viliani previously held the position of General and Artistic Director of the Donnaregina Foundation for contemporary arts / MOTHER of Naples (2013-2019) where he curated and organized exhibitions by Francis Alÿs, John Armleder, Darren Bader, Thomas Bayrle, Daniel Buren, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Roberto Cuoghi, Cécile B. Evans, Mario Garcia Torres-Alighiero Boetti, Liam Gillick, Wade Guyton, Camille Henrot, Mimmo Jodice, Mark Leckey, Robert Mapplethorpe, Fabio Mauri, Boris Mikhailov, Giulia Piscitelli, Vettor Pisani, Stephen Prina, Walid Raad, Mathilde Rosier, Ettore Spalletti (in collaboration with GAM, Turin and MAXXI, Rome), Sturtevant, on Lucio Amelio and on the patron, collector and cultural entrepreneur Marcello Rumma. At MADRE he also coordinated Per_formare, a project dedicated to the progressive formation of the permanent collection, organized seminars and publications dedicated to Gianfranco Baruchello, Kerstin Braetsch, Gusmao & Paiva, Paul Sietsema, Cally Spooner, Akram Zaatari and was co-curator, in 2017, of the group exhibitions Pompei @ Madre. Archaeological matter (with Massimo Osanna) and, at the Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Carta Bianca. Capodimonte imaginaire (with Sylvain Bellenger). From 2009 to 2012 Viliani was Director of the Galleria Civica Foundation-Research Center on Contemporary Trento, where he curated exhibitions by Robert Kuśmirowski, Melvin Moti, Gustav Metzger, Roman Ondak, Rosa Barba, Clemens von Wedemeyer and Nedko Solakov, commissioned Momentary Monument # 3 by Lara Favaretto and organized seminars and coordinated publications by Gerard Byrne, Dora García, Alberto Garutti, Tim Rollins and KOS, Francesco Vezzoli, Luca Vitone, Tris Vonna-Michell, The Otolith Group. From 2005 to 2009 he was Curator at the MAMbo-Museum of Modern Art in Bologna, where he presented exhibitions and projects dedicated to Adam Chodzko, Jay Chung-Q Takeki Maeda, Jeroen de Rijke-Willem de Rooij, Nico Dockx & Building Transmissions, Trisha Donnelly, Ryan Gander, Guyton Walker, Sarah Morris, Diego Perrone, Seth Price, Natascha Sadr-Haghighian, Bojan Sarcevic, Markus Schinwald, Christopher Williams and a retrospective exhibition by Giovanni Anselmo. In 2005 he received the Lorenzo Bonaldi Prize promoted by the GAMeC Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bergamo, in 2006 he was among the 60 players of the Biennale de Lyon and, in 2010-2012, he was among the six members of the dOCUMENTA Agent-Core Group (13), co-supervising positions in Kabul and Bamiyan (Afghanistan) with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Aman Mojadidi. He has also curated, as guest curator in Italian public institutions, exhibitions by Pawel Althamer, Haris Epaminonda, David Maljkovic, Deimantas Narkevicius. He is the author of scientific essays and publications and regular contributor of the magazines “Flash Art”, “Mousse”, “Kaleidoscope” and “Frog”.
