Markus Lüpertz, Giulio Paolini: figure – colonne – finestre (figures – columns – windows)

Markus Lüpertz (Liberec, Czechoslovakia,[1] 1941) is one of the leading exponents of German Neo-Expressionist painting, a movement that had a profound impact on the development of art in Germany and the rest of Europe from the 1960s onwards. Giulio Paolini (Genoa, Italy, 1940), a member of the Arte Povera group, focuses on the themes of space and time in work that continually reflects on the whys and wherefores of the artistic process. While the two artists’ personalities and the formal characteristics of their work are quite different, there are still parallels to be drawn between their intentions, approaches and working methods. Both artists repeat figurative elements, organising entire series around these models, which can either be everyday objects or references to traditional artistic [L.F.]forms. The works and materials presented in this exhibition opened up new avenues of interpretation of the art of Lüpertz and Paolini, as well as providing insights into the problems and the making of art in Europe in the decades following World War II.
