Susan Philipsz
This work made by Susan Philipsz for the Digital Cosmos of Castello di Rivoli is an online iteration of the work Filter (1998), single channel sound installation with one song played over the PA system every 15 minutes.
Laganside Buscentre, Belfast (1998), Melbourne International Biennale (1999), Thread Waxing, New York, (1999), Cornerhouse, Manchester, (1999), Tirana Biennale, Tirana, (2001)
In 1998 I organised a project for public sites in Belfast called Resonate. Each of the invited artists were asked to choose a site in the city and to develop a work with that site in mind. I chose the Laganside buscentre because even through it was quite a new building it had a melancholy atmosphere. It was never full or busy and you always had the feeling that people were waiting to be somewhere else. Filter was a sound installation that played through the public address system of the buscentre every fifteen minutes. I recorded myself singing melancholy pop songs with themes of longing and escape. The songs were Who Loves the Sun by Velvet Underground, Airbag by Radiohead, Jesus Don’t Want Me For a Sunbeam by The Vaselines and As Tears Go By by The Rolling Stones.
As Tears Go By
The Rolling Stones
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by
My riches can’t buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch
As tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by
